Tucked among the lakes north of Tampa is the charming community of Lutz. Yeah, charming as it may be, a more important consideration is this: how the heck is it pronounced? Does it rhyme with “nuts” or, does it rhyme with “roots”? Here’s a clue: the community motto is not “Nuts for Lutz”. So, by the process of elimination, one can conclude that the latter pronunciation is the correct answer. Lutz, as in “roots.”
From its humble beginnings as a mere “whistle stop” along the Tampa Northern Railroad, Lutz grew around the depot as the more “enlightened” passengers stepped off the train and, marveling at the wonders of its natural beauty, decided to stay and establish their, um, roots (you had to see that coming, right?). And, plenty settlers there were! Today, Lutz has a rather unique distinction of encompassing parts of both Hillsborough and Pasco counties, with a population of nearly 20,000 residents, according to the latest census statistics. In a survey conducted in 2004 by MSN.com, Lutz was recognized as one of the “100 Best Places/Cities to Live.” It seems “contented” can be added to the list of adjectives to describe life in the community.
Despite its growth, though, Lutz remains connected to its origins. Although the old depot was demolished, a charming replica was erected in 2000 as the focal point of the revitalization of “Beautiful Downtown Lutz”. Many of the settlement’s buildings were salvaged and refurbished. The original US Post Office became home to an art gallery, and a public library was built behind the depot replica to enhance and encourage interest in the original “downtown” area, and its history.
Florida’s sunshine and warm temperatures provide residents with the perfect opportunity to enjoy recreational activities year-round. Lake Park, situated in northern Hillsborough County, is a 600-acre park with five lakes, swamps, and wooded areas. It’s a veritable “smorgasbord” of outdoor activities, both leisure and invigorating. Boating, fishing, horseback riding, and picnicking, are just a few of the choices available. Wanna get your William Tell on? Lake Park has an archery range; or, if motocross is more to your liking, there’s a custom track for that too! Oh, and just in case, there happens to be great medical facilities close by to mend any broken bones you may incur as a result of that motocross-thing. But, the recreational choices aren’t limited to Lake Park. Memorial, Oscar Cooler, Bullard, and Nye parks are also located in Lutz. Additionally, Lutz has a beautiful Little League park nestled in a quaint setting along scenic Lutz-Lake Fern Road to encourage the budding youthful athletes in the community. Of course, there are several golf courses and country clubs in close proximity to Lutz for players who want to improve their game, or simply to socialize at the 19th hole.
Lutz real estate includes a wide range of property types including historic homes, private luxury estates, charming (there’s that word again) condos, and numerous single family homes in a variety of styles and floor plans. Whatever your real estate dreams, Lutz has the perfect property to meet your family’s needs and wants. And, if that’s not enough to convince you, here’s a fun fact: Part of the movie Edward Scissorhands was filmed on Tinsmith Circle in the neighborhood of Carpenter's Run in north Lutz in Pasco County. The town was even mentioned in the film’s credits. Live in Lutz, and you’re practically a celebrity by default!
Clearly, today’s Lutz is as marvelous and wonderful as its first settlers imagined. Don’t you kind of want to be considered just as “enlightened” as those who came before you? No matter how many adjectives are used to describe it; no matter the community’s proper pronunciation, one thing is certain: you and your family need only remember one word to describe Lutz, “HOME.”
