Before you get too excited, this isn’t the Land O Lakes, where all things butter reign supreme. No, that Land O Lakes is located just outside of St. Paul, MN, and is a business, not a place to live. So, other than its butter, the only thing noteworthy is how cold it gets up in those parts during winter!
No, this Land O Lakes basks in the sunshine and warmth of south central Pasco County! It is noted as much for its seemingly boundless protected natural areas that long to be hiked, biked, picnicked, jogged, and walked, as it is for its easy access to the highways and bi-ways that call to the intrepid spirit within to explore the innumerable points of interest around the Tampa Bay area … and beyond!
Land O Lakes has witnessed a very rapid growth spurt over the past 10-to-20 years by expanding its territorial reach through the combination of absorbing nearby former towns, and developing and building new neighborhoods, shopping areas, and schools. This new construction was enhanced by the community’s proximity to several major roads, such as the Suncoast Parkway (SR589) on its western edge, and Dale Mabry Highway (SR597). US41 (Land O Lakes Blvd) is the main north-south road through not only the community, but the rest of central Pasco County as well. SR54 is the main east-west road that runs through Land O Lakes.
Undeveloped natural spaces remain a priority within Land O Lakes, and include points of interest such as the Dupree Gardens, a 25-acre botanical garden that is renowned as the “Blossom Center of Florida,” and the Connor Preserve, one part of a wildlife habitat corridor envisioned by Pasco County and the Southwest Florida Water Management District that connects the Starkey Wilderness Preserve to the Cypress Creek Preserve, an area comprising several thousand acres of continuous undeveloped natural beauty. On the extreme western border of Land O Lakes, the Suncoast Bike Trail provides biking and hiking enthusiasts with a safe, unobstructed means to “commune with nature” in a less adventurous manner.
The public school districts are operated by Pasco County Schools, and include two high schools and middle schools, as well as seven elementary schools. Additionally, there are two charter and private schools within the community.
Although it’s probably not the most well-known Land O Lakes, this one certainly promises a heck of a lot more in the way of warm sunshine and living a healthy lifestyle!
